"Seeing Sound: Mapping Florentine Soundscapes"

 

Bio:

Niall Atkinson is the Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Art History and the College at the University of Chicago. Situated primarily in Italy, Atkinson's current scholarship considers the social dimensions of architecture through a series of research themes derived from his interest in the historical understanding of urban experience. His recent publications include, “Thinking through Noise, Building Toward Silence: Creating a Sound Mind and Sound Architecture in the Premodern City,” in Grey Room (2014) and “The Republic of Sound: Listening to Florence at the Threshold of the Renaissance,” in I Tatti Studies in the Italian Renaissance (2013). His book, The Noisy Renaissance: Sound, Architecture, and Urban Life in Early Modern Florence is forthcoming from Pennsylvania State University Press. Atkinson holds a PhD in the History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University and has held fellowships from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and the Max-Planck-Institut.
