ROUNDTABLE: Sustaining Music and Musicians in the Age of Streaming

The UC Santa Barbara Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Music (CISM) and the Department of Music will present a special roundtable event, "Sustaining Music and Musicians in the Age of Streaming," on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 6 pm PDT via Zoom. Participants will include Jean Cook, Eamon Fogarty, Regan Sommer McCoy, Franz Nicolay, and Greg Saunier. 

Jean Cook is an artist, producer, and advocate for musicians. From 2005-2015, Jean directed research, education, and advocacy initiatives at the intersection of music, copyright, and technology for Future of Music Coalition. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, the Steering Committee of Music Workers Alliance, and is a member of the Music Policy Forum Action Network.

Eamon Fogarty is a composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and translator currently based in Austin, TX. He has sung in choirs, improvised music with dancers, written for chamber ensembles, soundtracked puppet shows, and in 2019 released "Blue Values" on Jealous Butcher Records.

Regan Sommer McCoy has 15+ years of experience in the music industry working with Hip Hop artists. She is the founder of The Mixtape Museum, which encourages the research, archiving, and data analysis of mixtapes and seeks to achieve systematic preservation in the DJ and hip-hop communities.

Franz Nicolay is a musician (The Hold Steady and others) and writer living in California's East Bay. His first book, The Humorless Ladies of Border Control: Touring the Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar, was named a “Season’s Best Travel Book” by the New York Times. He has taught at Bard College and Columbia University, and is currently a lecturer at UC Berkeley. Learn more at franznicolay.com

Greg Saunier is a musician, producer, and composer best known as the drummer and founding member of Deerhoof. Rolling Stone included Saunier alongside Brian Chippendale and Zach Hill as together composing "a generation of trailblazing 21st-century avant-rock percussionists."
